The magical city of Barcelona has plenty of places where musicians come together to have fun and improvise in lively jam sessions! Whether you play an instrument or sing, or you’re just looking to enjoy a different night out at the bar, the district of Gràcia is where you want to be.
It is a tradition of the world of jazz music, where its musicians without having tried before, get on stage and improvise. In jazz the improvisation of the musicians on the stage is a fundamental part, it is a strong characteristic of this musical genre, one of its essences, which makes it different from the others. The meetings of a Jam Session are casual and often even purely spontaneous. In Barcelona there are a lot of places where these meetings tend to occur with a lot of recurrence.
Gràcia is the neighborhood where the Catalan rumba was born. In Fraternitat street there is a plaque dedicated to El Pescaílla where it says: “At number 8 of Fraternitat street, in 1925, Antonio González El Pescaílla, creator of the Catalan rumba was born”. There is also a square dedicated to Gato Pérez and a writing in his memory in the Plaza del Poble Romaní. Thanks to his influence, young rumba groups such as the Sabor de Gràcia were born. And also from the street of Fraternitat came the king of boleros, Moncho.
With so much music history it is no surprise that when looking for live music or a more authentic feel, Gràcia is the place to go!
In case you have not lived it yet, you should know that in these live concerts musicians of any kind meet (musicians, singers, saxophonists …) who play improvised music of various genres, depending on the day, the place and the groups; mainly jazz, but also blues and rock, among many others.
