The Fira of Santa Llúcia is Barcelona’s oldest Christmas market and dates back to the 18th Century. It is located in the square (Plaça) in front of the Cathedral of Barcelona in the Gothic Quarter. The market takes place every day from late November until the 23rd of December and it is open from 10:30 to 20:30.
Most of the stalls sell traditional Christmas decorations including trees, mistletoe, figures and accessories for nativity scenes, as well as caganers and cagatios. There are also a number of stalls selling handcrafted items.
The fair, celebrates its 232 anniversary (1786-2018) and will open on the 30th of November, until the 23rd of December.
History of the Fira de Santa Llúcia
The Fira de Santa Llúcia dates back to 1786. This date is a reliable indicator of both the celebration of the fair and of its importance, as two very trustworthy sources record it. The first of these is found in the writings of Rafael Amat, a Catalan writer of the 18th century (1746-1818). The second source comes from the great folklorist and author of the Costumari Català, Joan Amades who confirms 1786 as the earliest known reliable date.
Amades writes that in the 19th century the Nativity scene fair was held for three days: for the Blessed Virgin and for Saint Lucy (Santa Llúcia), in Pla de la Seu – where the cathedral of Barcelona is located; in the Plaça del Pi, Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol and Plaça del Born. These stalls sold figures, little houses and other constructions and pieces for Nativity scenes, such as bridges, fountains, mills, wells, birdhouses, and so on. The raw materials such as moss, corl and other plants could be found on the steps of the Cathedral. As Nativity scenes became more popular, the number of stalls at both fairs grew until they linked together, joining forces and creating just one big Christmas market.
Fira de Santa Llúcia is one of the oldest Christmas traditions of the city of Barcelona.
Nowadays, the Fira de Santa Llúcia begins at the end of November or early December, with more than 280 stands divided by sectors depending on what they sell; located in front of the Pla de la Seu.
